Finding our flow in community work

(how to stay sane)

Community initiatives have incredible potential to make a positive impact. They can fill a gap, shift a narrative, or create a space for change. But we also need to be mindful of their limitations.

They are often volunteer-led, relying on people’s time, energy, and goodwill — and for these efforts to be sustainable in the long term, the people involved need to remain both mentally well and financially stable.

Sometimes, the people leading an initiative aren’t necessarily the best fit for the role — but they are doing the job. Sometimes, an organisation takes on something it may not be best placed to deliver, but they are doing the work.

That shouldn’t go unnoticed, but it can cause friction, frustration, and pressure on the people involved.

Having been a part of many community organisations, one thing that stands out is the most effective ones tend to play to people’s strengths, interests, and motivations.

Of course, people can grow into new roles and develop new skills. But when a role is fundamentally misaligned with someone’s strengths or interests, the answer isn’t always to push them to change. Sometimes, it’s about finding a better fit.

Hence, my approach for staying sane and making community involvement sustainable is this:

Know the role you want to play — and understand the roles others want to play, too.

Be clear about what you hope to gain from being involved, and what you can offer in return.

This might sound a little self-serving, but I think it’s quite the opposite.

Being honest about our motivations, strengths, and limitations helps set clearer expectations, allows people to contribute in ways that work for them, and can prevent a lot of unnecessary tension.

We can’t solve all the challenges in our communities, but we can make real progress when we find our flow.
